S’East Governors Pushing for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release – Alex Otti
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has revealed that governors of Nigeria’s South East region are actively engaging the Federal Government to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking during his monthly media interaction with journalists on Thursday, Governor Otti disclosed that discussions are ongoing behind the scenes to ensure Kanu’s freedom. While declining to provide full details, Otti assured that efforts are being made at the highest level.
According to him: “The information and assurances are not for public consumption. As his governor, I am in the forefront of ensuring that he comes back. The South East governors are also involved. So, we are discussing.”
Beyond the Kanu matter, Otti emphasized that his administration remains committed to strengthening security across Abia State, especially as the year draws to a close. He reiterated his government’s ongoing support for security agencies, including the police, army, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
“We will continue to support the agencies with little things to make their lives easier. We are also renovating and expanding the prison, not that we are expecting more criminals to be sent there,” Otti said.
The governor commended security agencies for maintaining relative peace in Abia but urged residents to remain vigilant during the ember months. He stressed the importance of community cooperation and intelligence-sharing to maintain safety.
“The state has been relatively peaceful. I want to use this opportunity to thank the security agencies, the army, and the officers who have worked and continue to work very hard. But it is never over yet. We have just launched into the ember months. We should all be more security-conscious and report what we see. A large part of success in security is information,” he stated.
On the challenge of school vandalism, Otti lamented the involvement of some youths and announced plans to recruit additional security personnel for educational institutions across the state.
“Some Abia youths are involved in the vandalisation of schools in the state. We have concluded plans to recruit four security staff for each school and they will resume duties soon,” the governor revealed.
Governor Otti also provided updates on ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects in Abia State. He disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will visit Abia next Friday to inaugurate several completed roads in Aba.
“We are almost set to flag off the reconstruction of the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene federal road route and that should happen in the next few weeks. And of course, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic will be here on Friday next week to commission a pack of routes and seven other routes in Aba,” Otti announced
Responding to protests by host communities over compensation for lands acquired for the Abia Airport project, the governor acknowledged lapses but assured that corrective measures are underway.
“I would like to acknowledge that not too long ago I was told that some people from Nsulu protested over non-payment of compensation. I was of the view that everybody had been paid. When my team returned, they found out that a few things had happened:
- Some genuine landowners had their details omitted and were not paid.
- Some protesters had not completed their documentation, delaying their payments.
- The contractor mistakenly encroached on spaces not originally marked for acquisition, which has now been corrected.”
“The contractor has issued instructions to address these issues promptly,” Otti added.
Governor Otti concluded by highlighting his administration’s achievements across multiple sectors of the state’s economy and assured residents that more projects and reforms are underway to improve infrastructure, security, and economic opportunities in Abia.
