NYSC Arrears 2025: Latest Update on FG Payment and Minimum Wage Adjustment
The National Youth Service Corps resumed payments for arrears on Wednesday, marking the first disbursement since the last payment on June 3, following a two-month break.
This payment relates to the new N77,000 monthly allowance recently approved by the Federal Government.
Recall that on April 5th, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, assured that corps members who recently completed their service will receive the new N77,000 monthly allowance approved by the Federal Government.
Speaking during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, Nafiu said, “Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details.”
He emphasised the government’s commitment, adding, “Nigerians should not fret about that because the government is both responsible and responsive to their needs.”
This development was confirmed by PUNCH, by a previously serving corps member who chose to remain anonymous, who said, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.
The payment of arrears, covering the period from July 2024 to March 2025, follows widespread frustration over delayed implementation after the Federal Government approved the allowance increase as part of its commitment to easing economic hardship for Nigerian youth.
Will FG Pay Corpers Arrears?
One of the most pressing questions among serving corps members in Nigeria today is:
“Will the Federal Government pay corpers arrears?” Following the approval of the new
minimum wage and ongoing debates around its implementation, many NYSC members are expecting
arrears to be paid retroactively. However, the Federal Government has not yet released an official
statement confirming exact payment timelines.
Typically, when the national minimum wage increases, the NYSC allowance (which is tied to the

How to Calculate Minimum Wage Arrears
Calculating arrears is straightforward. Arrears represent the difference between the old
allowance and the new approved allowance, multiplied by the number of months owed.
Formula:

For example, if the new allowance is ₦60,000 and the old allowance was ₦33,000, the difference
is ₦27,000. If the adjustment covers 6 months, the arrears will be:
₦27,000 × 6 = ₦162,000 per corps member.

As of September 2025, there has been no official disbursement of arrears to corps members.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management has acknowledged that discussions with
the Federal Government are ongoing, but no confirmed payment dates have been released.
Many corpers have taken to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook
to demand transparency regarding when the arrears will be credited. Youth advocacy groups
are also putting pressure on the Ministry of Finance to clarify the government’s stance.
What is the NYSC Arrears 2025?
The NYSC arrears 2025 refers to the backlog of allowance payments owed to serving corps members
as a result of the new minimum wage law. If the Federal Government confirms retroactive application,
every corps member currently serving (and possibly recent batches) will be entitled to arrears covering
the difference in allowance from the effective date of the new wage structure.
Are Corpers Going to Be Paid Arrears?
While expectations are high, the payment of arrears depends entirely on the Federal Government’s
official directive. Historically, when Nigeria implemented the ₦30,000 minimum wage, corpers received

Until a circular is released by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF)

depending on budgetary provisions.

In simple terms, payments in arrears means that you are owed money for past months
because a new salary or allowance rate was implemented but not immediately applied. Once the
adjustment is approved, the backlog (arrears) is calculated and paid to cover the missed months.
For corpers, this would mean receiving extra payments in addition to their regular monthly allowance.
NYSC Arrears Payment From Which Month?
One of the most asked questions is: “From which month will NYSC arrears be paid?”
If the Federal Government decides on arrears, payment will likely start from the official
commencement date of the new minimum wage law, not from the announcement date.
For example, if the minimum wage law took effect in May 2025, then corpers serving
from May onwards would be entitled to arrears covering May to the present month.
