FULL LIST: APC Sweeps Rivers Elections, Wins 20 of 23 LGAs

This resounding success marks a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics, as Rivers has traditionally been a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since the return of democracy in 1999.
The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Michael Odey, officially announced the results at the Commission’s Headquarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt on Sunday afternoon.
According to him, while the APC swept the majority of LGAs, the PDP managed to secure victory in just three LGAs, namely Obio/Akpor, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Port Harcourt City Local Government Area (PHALGA).

Historically, Rivers has been a PDP stronghold, producing powerful political leaders and governors who have influenced both state and national politics.
The APC’s triumph suggests a major political realignment and reflects a shift in voter confidence across the state.
Analysts believe this outcome could have lasting implications for the 2027 general elections. With APC now holding control of 20 LGAs, the party is expected to consolidate its grassroots influence,
thereby strengthening its presence in the Niger Delta region and beyond.
Dr. Odey confirmed that certificates of return will be presented to all winners on Monday, September 1,
cementing their official status as duly elected local government chairpersons.
Despite this assurance, there have been reports of voter apathy in some areas, as well as minor disputes during the collation process.
However, no major incidents of violence were recorded, making the election one of the most peaceful in the state’s recent history.
and Port Harcourt City (PHALGA). These areas remain PDP’s traditional bastions, largely due to their urban influence and strong grassroots networks.
Political observers suggest that PDP’s ability to retain these LGAs demonstrates that while the APC has gained momentum, the PDP still holds significant influence in certain parts of the state.
This could set the stage for more competitive contests in future state and federal elections.
The party has promised to implement developmental projects, empower youths, and promote inclusivity in leadership.
Local government administrations are pivotal in addressing grassroots issues such as waste management, rural development, healthcare, education, and security.
The APC’s overwhelming victory provides the party with an opportunity to demonstrate good governance and win long-term loyalty from the people.
They also applauded the RSIEC for conducting what they termed a “credible and transparent election.”
Meanwhile, PDP officials in the state have raised concerns over the conduct of the polls, alleging irregularities in some areas.
They called for a review of the electoral process, even as they acknowledged their victory in the three LGAs retained.
By controlling 20 LGAs, APC can effectively mobilize grassroots support, build stronger voter structures, and challenge PDP in a state that has historically been one of its key powerhouses.
The victory also highlights the growing influence of emerging political leaders within the APC, who are expected to play major roles in shaping the state’s political future.
