Amorim Retains Man Utd Support and ‘Not Concerned’ About His Futur
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has reiterated he is not concerned about his job despite the club’s latest setback in the Premier League.
The optimism generated by last week’s victory over Chelsea quickly faded as Manchester United suffered a damaging 3-1 defeat to Brentford. The result has left United firmly stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League table, piling pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim.
Despite the loss, sources within the club confirm that minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains fully behind Amorim. Club officials dismiss rumours of a replacement shortlist, stating that no one is being lined up to take his position. The hierarchy believes the Portuguese coach deserves a full season to prove himself with the right squad.
Speculation around Amorim’s future continues to grow ahead of Saturday’s fixture against in-form Sunderland at Old Trafford. Since taking charge, Amorim has collected 34 points from 33 league games and has yet to secure consecutive victories—a worrying sign for supporters expecting progress after last season’s 15th-place finish.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Amorim said: “I am never concerned about my job. I will do the best I can every minute I am here.”
The coach remains adamant that he is committed to his style, even as critics and pundits question his tactics and formation choices.
Defender Matthijs de Ligt admitted that the team’s performance was not up to standard but defended Amorim, stating: “It’s always easy to look to the manager but, in the end, the players on the pitch have to do it.”
Former Wales midfielder Ashley Williams questioned how long the club could continue under Amorim without improvement. Alan Shearer added that the United hierarchy cannot afford another managerial misstep, while Martin Keown compared Amorim’s record to previous managers who were sacked with similar statistics.
“They don’t look good enough,” Keown said. “If this was 12 months after Ferguson, this would have been done weeks ago.”
Bruno Fernandes missed his second penalty of the season during the defeat, extending United’s wait for an away league win to eight games—their worst run since 2019. Since Amorim’s appointment, no team has conceded the first goal in more league matches than Manchester United.
Amorim admitted that his team had prepared for Brentford’s game plan but failed to execute it properly. “The goals today, we worked on during the week. That is frustrating,” he said.
Critics argue that Amorim’s refusal to move away from his preferred 3-4-2-1 system is hurting the team. In contrast, Brentford’s rookie manager Keith Andrews showed tactical flexibility, switching to a back four to gain more midfield control. Analysts, including Micah Richards, believe Amorim’s “stubbornness” could ultimately be his undoing.
The two goals United conceded in the first 20 minutes were labelled “shambolic” by Richards. Errors from Harry Maguire and Altay Bayindir allowed Brentford’s Igor Thiago to score twice, leaving United with a mountain to climb.
“When we win, it’s not the system. When we lose, it’s the system. I understand that,” Amorim said sarcastically. “It’s more that we play this game the way Brentford wants to play it.”
Despite the backlash, Amorim insists his methods can still deliver success if given time.
Reflecting on the defeat, Amorim said: “When you win, you feel the momentum is here. When you lose, you go back and fight again for the one win that can help you create the momentum.”
The United boss acknowledged that inconsistency remains the biggest hurdle to the club’s resurgence, but reiterated his commitment to turning things around.
