Former President Goodluck Jonathan has once again made headlines after describing Nigerian politics as full of liars and betrayers.
He made this declaration at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, in Benin City, Edo State.According to Jonathan, “It’s difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening.”
He stressed that politics in Nigeria is dominated by people who change their stance within hours, betraying commitments and trust.

While lamenting the challenges of political loyalty, Jonathan praised Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, his former Chief of Staff and former Edo State Deputy Governor, as an exceptional and dependable ally.
He noted that Ogiadomhe stood by him, even during the turbulent times of the 2015 general elections, which he lost to the late President Muhammadu Buhari. In his words: “I’ve witnessed a lot of betrayals, especially in my 2015 elections, and Mike is somebody who would take a bullet on my behalf. He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank. Most other politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank. They will tell you something, the next one hour they are saying another.”

Jonathan’s remarks have reignited speculations about whether he would make a political comeback in 2027.
Several prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been openly calling for him to contest again.Among those urging him to run include former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana, and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.
They believe Jonathan’s political experience and reputation could unite the party and provide Nigeria with stable leadership.

Interestingly, Jonathan himself has remained silent on the matter. However, his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, added a twist to the debate in May 2025.
She declared publicly that her husband would support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recalling Tinubu’s role in Jonathan’s 2011 election victory. She further promised to campaign alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in the 2027 elections, signaling her loyalty to the current administration rather than a return to partisan presidential ambitions.

Despite Patience Jonathan’s statement, opinions remain divided among Jonathan’s close allies.
Some have maintained that the former President has no interest in returning to active politics.
According to one of his associates, “He enjoys being a statesman that he has become since 2015 after he lost the election. He would not like to tarnish his global image. At the same time, he does not want to be the one that would allow himself to be used to destroy Southern solidarity.”However, his cousin, Robert Azibaola, has insisted that Jonathan will indeed contest in 2027. This contradiction fuels ongoing speculation across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Jonathan’s reflections on betrayal are closely tied to his experience in the 2015 elections.

That election marked the first time in Nigeria’s history that a sitting president lost power through the ballot box.
Many analysts argue that betrayals from within his political circle contributed significantly to his defeat. The former President’s comments therefore highlight a broader issue in Nigerian politics: loyalty is rare, and betrayal is common.
His words serve as a warning to younger politicians about the importance of integrity in public service.

The 70th birthday of Chief Mike Ogiadomhe was not only a personal milestone but also a political reunion of top figures.
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo was represented by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa.
The event also saw the presence of former Edo State Governors Lucky Igbinedion and Osarhiemen Osunbor.Other dignitaries included deputy governors Rev. Peter Obadan, Pius Odubu, and Marvelous Omobayo, as well as former Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dakwambo.
Their presence highlighted Ogiadomhe’s influence in Nigerian politics and his close ties across different administrations.

Since leaving office in 2015, Jonathan has embraced the role of a global statesman.
He has led election observation missions across Africa and continues to enjoy respect internationally as a symbol of democratic transition. His decision to concede defeat in 2015 is still regarded as one of the most important moments in Nigeria’s democratic history.
For many Nigerians, Jonathan’s legacy as a peaceful leader may outweigh the challenges of his presidency.

Goodluck Jonathan’s candid words about betrayal and dishonesty in Nigerian politics reflect the challenges of leadership in Africa’s largest democracy.
While some see him as a potential candidate for 2027, others argue that his legacy as a respected statesman is more important than a political comeback. As speculations continue, one thing remains clear: Jonathan’s voice still carries weight in Nigerian politics.
His warning about the scarcity of trustworthy politicians resonates deeply in a nation yearning for credible leadership.
Whether he returns to the ballot or continues as a respected elder statesman, Jonathan’s place in Nigeria’s political story is secure.
