AIG Fayoade Denies Removal as Zone 2 Police Chief

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Adegoke Fayoade, has dismissed viral reports
suggesting that he has been removed from his position as the head of Zone 2 Police Command,
which oversees Lagos and Ogun States. The respected officer described the circulating story as
false, misleading, and damaging to public trust.

Earlier reports, particularly from Punch News, alleged that
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun had ordered the removal of AIG Fayoade
amid internal succession intrigues within the police hierarchy. This quickly spread across security circles
and social media platforms, causing confusion and sparking debates about leadership stability in the
Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Speaking directly to Punch News on Wednesday night, Fayoade clarified that he has not been served
with any official communication regarding his alleged removal or redeployment. He emphasized that
he remains fully in charge of his office, carrying out all responsibilities attached to the command.

“As far as I am concerned, it is not true. I have not received any paper or anything, and people
have been calling me everywhere. I am still working at Zone 2 and doing my official duties as
the AIG in charge,” he said.

He further noted that he has been actively engaged in his daily tasks, supervising police operations,
and ensuring effective security management within Lagos and Ogun States.

The false publication caused a stir within the Nigerian security architecture.
Rumors of sudden leadership changes often trigger uncertainty among officers and may even
influence public perception of policing stability. Fayoade expressed disappointment
at the spread of unverified information, noting that such speculation only breeds tension.

“People have been calling me everywhere, but as I speak to you, I am still the AIG Zone 2.
I have not received any official letter, and I am doing my duties,” he reiterated.

Security analysts point out that when misinformation spreads unchecked, it undermines
the credibility of law enforcement institutions. The Nigeria Police Force, already facing
challenges of public trust, can ill-afford such destabilizing rumors.

The Zone 2 Police Command is one of the most strategic zonal commands in Nigeria.
It oversees operations in Lagos State Nigeria’s commercial hub and Ogun State,
which shares a border with Lagos.

As AIG in charge, Fayoade is responsible for:

  • Coordinating security strategies across Lagos and Ogun States.
  • Overseeing divisional police commands under the zone.
  • Managing crime prevention, investigation, and intelligence gathering.
  • Ensuring discipline and professionalism among officers.

Given the importance of Lagos as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse,
leadership stability in Zone 2 is crucial for national security and law enforcement effectiveness.

Leadership transitions within the Nigeria Police Force often attract public attention.
Allegations of succession intrigues, especially in commands as influential as Zone 2,
frequently give rise to speculation. In this case, the rumor may have stemmed from ongoing discussions
about police promotions, redeployments, and the Inspector-General’s plans for restructuring.

However, Fayoade’s categorical denial confirms that no such decision has been communicated to him officially.
This underlines the need for caution when reporting leadership changes in sensitive institutions like the police.

The controversy highlights the growing problem of fake news in Nigeria.
With the rise of social media platforms, unverified reports often go viral before official clarifications are issued.
While investigative journalism plays a vital role in democracy, premature or inaccurate reporting
can harm reputations and destabilize institutions.

Experts stress the importance of ethical journalism, fact-checking, and responsible reporting,
especially when dealing with sensitive national security issues.

AIG Adegoke Fayoade is widely respected for his service in the Nigeria Police Force.

before his appointment to Zone 2. His leadership style is often described as strategic,
people-centered, and firm on crime prevention.

Under his command, Zone 2 has intensified operations against armed robbery, kidnapping,
and cult-related activities, ensuring improved safety across Lagos and Ogun States.

The rumors surrounding AIG Fayoade’s removal as Zone 2 Police Chief
turned out to be baseless. His clear denial reassures both officers and the public
that he remains firmly in charge of the command.

and the importance of seeking confirmation from official sources before spreading sensitive news.

most critical zones.
