Fashion designer and influencer, Veekee James, has revealed how false claims surrounding her marriage nearly pushed her into depression.
Appearing recently on the Nancy Isime Show alongside her husband, Femi Atere, Veekee recounted that one of the most hurtful rumours she faced was the allegation that she had snatched her husband from a friend.
“I think it was a story about how I was stolen from a friend and we were sleeping with each other. You know, this is happening.
“And so many of them were all lies,” she said.
The fashion entrepreneur explained that the false reports deeply affected her mental health, leaving her shaken and fearful of the damage they could cause to her personal brand.
“It almost put me in depression, you know? And that was like the first time in my life I got to understand what people who say that they are depressed feel.
“I remember entering into my room and I didn’t come out for like two days. I was there crying and praying.
“And I told God, you know the story. If you know that these are all lies that they’re saying about us, help us get through this without this ruining my brand,” she recounted.
She added that faith and prayers helped her overcome that period.
“I remember praying and waiting on God for days. And the way he brought me out, it was like a miracle. And then I kept seeing stories upon stories.
“And for some reason, it was just so easy for me to just laugh about it,” she added.
Speaking further, Veekee shared how she deals with online backlash and trolling. She said she often reflects on her actions to check if she went wrong, even though her brother advised her to ignore comments.
“Most times my brother would say, ‘Oh, don’t look at them. Don’t read the comments.’ I’m like, ‘No, I have to read the comments and go through it.’
“Every time they say you are trending, OK, I go there. Yes. What is making me trend? What’s happening? The places where I have to check and see, OK, am I doing too much here? Do I need to learn? I ask God to help me and guide me. It’s amazing,” she said.
On her marriage, she revealed that she sought God’s confirmation before choosing her husband.
“I told God, you know the story. If you know that these are all lies that they’re saying about us, help us get through this without this ruining my brand.
I remember praying and waiting on God for days. And the way he brought me out, it was like a miracle,” she said.
“When I met Femi, I knew that he was the one. I wanted God to confirm that he was the one.
“And when he did, my ears were blocked. And they are blocked till today or forever.
Veekee also spoke about her vision for her future children, stressing that she would not shield them from the spotlight.
“I don’t plan to want to make a fun video with my kids where we’re dancing and we’re having fun and then I’m hiding them.
“I plan to have kids who would be role models in society.
“I plan to have kids who will go out there, go around the world and show their talents to the world. I don’t plan to have kids I’m going to hide,” she said.
Her husband, Atere, who described himself as a private person, said online negativity does not affect him.
“I can tell you for a fact, I’m a BTS person. You might see my wife all out because that’s who she is, that’s the type of person she is.
“So I am just the reserved part and I’m always behind her.
“So whatever anybody says online doesn’t really bother me. That’s just the honest truth,” Atere concluded.
