LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 18 suspects after hoodlums hijacked a protest over a power outage at Tejuosho Market, preventing an attempted invasion of a commercial bank and restoring peace to the bustling area.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the command swiftly responded to the violent disturbance to protect lives and property.
The Police Command revealed that its rapid intervention thwarted a planned attack on a commercial bank located within Tejuosho Market. Mobile Police officers stationed at the bank repelled the rioters’ initial assault, preventing them from gaining entry.
Additional police forces, including Anti-riot Squads and tactical teams, were immediately deployed following a distress call to contain the situation.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. under the guise of a protest against prolonged power outages. However, a group of individuals exploited the demonstration to unleash violence, disrupt market activities, and attack unsuspecting citizens.
Police reports indicate that the mob’s intentions escalated quickly as they shifted focus from the protest to the commercial bank in the market.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, condemned the violent actions, reiterating that attacks on police personnel and destruction of property would not be tolerated.
“We urge Lagosians to show utmost respect to police personnel in the discharge of their duties to protect lives and property,” CP Jimoh stated.
The statement confirmed that 18 suspects have been taken into police custody while investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest additional perpetrators involved in the attack.
The combined efforts of various police units successfully dispersed the violent crowd, ensured the safety of the bank, and restored order at Tejuosho Market.
The Lagos State Police Command assured residents and business owners that normalcy has been fully restored, urging them to go about their daily activities without fear.
The latest arrests come just days after the command apprehended two suspected cultists with a firearm in the Akoka area of the state during a special operation targeting criminal elements.
The police also refuted claims that three people died following a cult clash in the Lakowe area of Ibeju-Lekki. Deputy PRO Oluseyi disclosed this in response to inquiries on cult-related activities in Lagos State.
Recent cult clashes in different parts of the state have reportedly claimed no fewer than five lives, prompting a stronger crackdown by security forces.
